Building a sustainable MedComms career

Hi Reader

I had a fantastic day last week at the Introduction to MedComms event at the University of Birmingham Medical School organised by FirstMedCommsJob.com. It was wonderful to speak with so many people interested in a career in MedComms!

In my presentation, I confided that I started my first MedComms job 19 years ago this month. Back then, I had no idea what the industry was all about, and part of my mission is to make sure anyone embarking on a MedComms career today is significantly better informed than I was!

My latest YouTube videos are on that topic, including an overview of the typical medical writing career pathway and my top tips on how to get your first MedComms job. As anyone who came to Birmingham knows, I love it when I can answer a question with, 'I've got a video about that...' 😉

If you weren't able to come to Birmingham, do sign up for the next event – Working in and around #MedComms will be at Heathrow on Monday 25th September 2023 and if last year is anything to go by, it will be a great day.

Heathrow isn't just for aspiring MedComms recruits though. There'll be plenty of agencies there, and lots of freelancers attending too. Over the next couple of weeks, my focus is shifting onto supporting freelancers.

The forthcoming issue of Medical Writing, the EMWA journal, is on MedComms freelancing and I have contributed an article around how coaching and mentoring can support a sustainable freelance career. It should be published any day now!

I'll be joining next week's MedComms Networking webinar to talk about this topic further, along with Charlotte Rooney, a coach who contributed to my article. I'll also be participating a Q&A session about all things freelancing with Vicky Sherwood (AKA the Biomed Badass) later in the webinar.

Do sign up to come along to the webinar next Wednesday, and come along with all your freelancing questions!

All the best

Eleanor

It shouldn't just be the agencies that have all the...

Hi Reader I am thrilled to announce that I am taking over the management of the MedComms Workbook service for freelancers in MedComms from its founder, Peter Llewellyn. We’re working together closely during the transition, and both hope it will go from strength to strength. As part of this transition, we’ve launched a community on the Heartbeat platform for the Workbook subscribers. This online space is dedicated to fostering connections, sharing knowledge, and supporting freelancers. You can...

Hi Reader Had you heard of MedComms when you were 15? I certainly hadn't! I've had a request from a school in London asking for a work experience opportunity in the spring/summer for a Year 10 student who is keen to become a medical writer. If you work for an agency based in London that might be able to help, please let me know! If you're actually hoping to start your own MedComms career but are a little beyond Year 10 work experience, you might find the First MedComms Job event at the...
